Pràctica dels grups sanguinis

Avui us portem els resultats de la pràctica dels grups sanguinis que es va dur a terme durant l'optativa. També es comparen els resultats amb els de Catalunya en general.

En el nostre grup, en el qual dues persones han participat en la pràctica, els resultats obtinguts han estat que una d'elles es A mentre que l'altra és 0. Aquestes dades, però, no s'han extret d'una mostra representativa (dues persones no són, òbviament, suficients per establir comparacions). És per aquesta raó que usarem les dades de la classe en general per desenvolupar percentatges i comparar-los amb els de tota Catalunya.

La taula següent mostra les persones de la classe amb els diferents grups sanguinis i les proporcions corresponents:

Un cop les dades de la classe s'han mostrat, és hora de determinar quins són els percentatges a nivell català. Aquests es mostren a la taula següent, on no hi figuren els factors Rh:

El que podem veure és que les dades no són iguals, però tampoc extremadament diferents. Les principals diferències les trobem principalment en el grup 0 i el grup B. La resta però, són força ajustades. De totes maneres, la mostra que varem utilitzar no és significativa ja que és composta de poques persones. Aquest fet fa que una sola persona pugui significar un 4 o 5 % de diferència i potser les desviacions respecte a la mitjana es deuen a això.

Finalment, i per aquells de vosaltres que us sentiu interessats per aquest tema, us deixem una comparativa dels grups sanguínis de diferents poblacions a nivell mundial.

15th European AIDS Conference

As you will possibly know, Barcelona held between October 21^st  and 24^th the European AIDS congress. With this article we bring you, in English, as you can see, the summary of what have been the most important issues treated in the congress.

Tuesday was the first day of the congress and the conferences were organized in two different blocks. On the one hand we could attend to the talk named “Novel viral and cellular targets against HIV”. This session was organized around the new targets that have been discovered throughout the year and how they can help attacking the HIV with greater efficiency.

On the other hand, the congress offered another conference under the title “STEPS- A Community Initiative to design the Pathway to a Long-Term Remission of HIV Infection”. It pretty complex, but can be summarized. The talk basically explained the progress that has been, and has to be, done towards the ultimate cure of the HIV, or at least an effective treatment that eliminates almost completely the effects of having such disease.

On Wednesday not two, but three conferences took place. The first one was an educational course oriented to a general public and its main aim was to explain what the HIV is and how it can be avoided.  Meanwhile, a talk about the HIV affecting women was also developed. Finally, a conference with the title “17^th International Workshop on Co-morbidities and Adverse Drug Reactions” was given. As it can be deduced from the title, it treated the possible adverse effects of different drugs in HIV patients.

Thursday was dedicated to different experts who gave little speeches and chats on independent rooms. Apart from this, little conferences (about 2 hours) took place as well. The posters also played an important role since many of them were explained in public by their creators: specialized scientists. Among these posters about epidemiology, treatment of the VIH and many more could be found. It was a very dynamic day since all the activities programmed were short but intense. Despite this positive aspect, there was the fact that all the expositions could not be visited for many of them were developed simultaneously.

Friday followed the same patron as the day before and different talks took place at the same time in the different rooms of the congress building. In order for you to understand better which the treated issues were some of the titles can be named. Among the most interesting conferences we could find the one related with the way HIV patients should face the disease or the one dedicated to retroviral therapy in the HIV.

Saturday was the fourth and last day of the congress. It lasted only from 8:00 to 12:00, and two talks were made during that time. The first lasted for an hour and a half and during that time different clinical cases were exposed. The second conference was related with the Standard Care in Europe, in fact this was its title, and included a final discussion. After that, the closing ceremony took place, together with some remarks about how this year’s congress had gone.

It is clear that the congress was a success and it has been a great experience to have held it in Barcelona. It is our hope that the HIV will be cured in the future. It will not be only one drug that accomplishes the feat, but possibly many of them combined. This is why all the institutions around the world must collaborate with the project and congresses like the one that took place this year in Barcelona provide a great help.

La recerca biomèdica a Catalunya

Us portem l'última de les tres presentacions relacionades amb la recerca biomèdica. Ha estat, així com l'anterior, desenvolupada per els nostres companys d'optativa i tracta dels centres de recerca biomèdica a Catalunya. Amb aquest document descubrireu de ben segur aspectes que desconeixieu d'aquesta disciplina de la ciència al nostre territori. Per altra banda, si us agrada esteu de sort, ja que penjarem aviat una entrada en referència al desè aniversari de l'IRB.

La malaltia de l'Alzheimer

Aquesta és la segona de les tres presentacions que tracten sobre temes relacionats amb la recerca biomèdica (la primera és la de la història de la medicina que trobareu més avall en el blog). Aquest cop el documents ha estat desenvolupat per els nostres companys d'optativa i tracta d'una manera molt completa la malaltia de l'Alzheimer. Hi podreu trobar tant les causes que la provoquen i els possibles factors de risc com els símptomes, molt coneguts alguns. També s'hi especifica l'investigació que s'està duent a terme per trobar tractaments efectius.

La carn processada com a casuant de càncer?

Avui us portem una notícia que ha causat un gran enrenou social i força inesperada. Tots sabíem que una dieta amb excés de carn processada (com per exemple les hamburgueses dels restaurants de menjar ràpid) no era gens saludable. Avui, però, la Organització Mundial de la Salud (OMS) ha publicat un estudi científic molt rigorós que relaciona directament aquest consum amb el càncer d’estómac i colorectal. A continuació us deixem l’article que, de segur, us farà pensar:
